About the Island

Hilton Head Island in Beaufort County, South Carolina, is 20 miles north of Savannah, Georgia, and 95 miles south of Charleston. The island gets its name from Captain William Hilton. In 1663, Captain Hilton identified a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, which he named "Hilton's Head" after himself. The island has fertile salt marshes, massive live oaks and maritime forest and over 12-miles of spectacular sugar- white sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular vacation destination.

The moment you cross the bridge onto Hilton Head Island, you immediately notice that it’s a location like no other, meticulously developed to highlight it’s natural environment.

The Town of Hilton Head Island incorporated as a municipality in 1983 and is well known for its "eco-friendly" development.

Hilton Head Island offers an unusual number of cultural opportunities for a community its size, including Broadway-quality plays at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the 120-member full chorus of the Hilton Head Choral Society, the highly rated Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra.

Hilton Head also has 40+ Championship level golf courses, 50 miles of biking and leisure trails, Harbors, 300 tennis courts, and many more recreational activities.

In addition the Island also offers a wide variety of shopping and restaurants to the delight of many.
